With the 2014 ASP World Championship Tour due to start in March we have been casting our eye over the Tour schedule. Kicking off in Queensland Australia on March the 1st the Tour draws to its climax at Pipe in early December.
The first thing that caught our eye is the purse that the Surfers will be competing for. Each win will earn the best competitor a cool $500 000, which when you look at the $25 000 the worlds best Bodyboarders compete for at each event on their tour, this shows the huge gulf in the way the Surf company’s look upon the belly sliding boys.
Rather puzzlingly we also noticed the lack of big name sponsors at three of the major spots on the tour these being Bali, Fiji and Margaret River. All other stops have attracted major corporate names including the likes of Billabong, Quiksilver and Rip Curl. There is no doubt the organisers will iron out the final details but you would have thought the big names of the industry would be fighting over a slice of the media coverage the Tour guarantees them.
So with the Tour edging closer, do you have any concerns over the lack of sponsors at 3 events? The reason we ask is the 2013 Bodyboard IBA Tour ran into serious difficulties over lack of sponsorship and this lead to the cancellation of the final event on the Tour. Now we are not saying this will happen to the ASP, the money is far greater in surfing, but we do ask – Are you surprised that with 6 weeks until the Tour gets underway three events remain unsponsored?
