Pipe isn’t the only spot to be holding a world class competition this week, as tomorrow (December 11th) we hope to see the 2014 Punta Galea Challenge get underway as it has been given the green light by the ASP. Some of the world’s best big wave hellmen will be heading to the right-hand point break to tackle the giant waves expected to arrive in the Basque Country tomorrow.
The beauty of this particular big wave competition is that due to its setting on the Nervión River mouth and easy accessibility to the local settlement of Getxo, it makes it a lot easier for spectators to attend and watch from the cliffs than at most stops on the Big Wave Tour. You can expect to see the likes of Grant “Twiggy” Baker, Makua Rothman and Greg Long competing against local Punta Galea wildcards in surf of up to 40 feet (depending on which forecast site you look at).
One thing you can take for certain is that the huge “weather bomb” that is currently battering the northern half of the UK, is chucking up massive swell that will travel down past European Atlantic facing coasts until it unloads in Basque Country with a huge swell period. Conditions, should really be as good as it gets for Punta Galea and you can expect to see many great images over the next few days from France, down through Spain and Portugal, and even Morocco on Friday.
We have embedded a video from the ASP below, showing Punta Galea in action and you will be able to check conditions and watch the competition unfold live via the link here. If you manage to get in on this huge winter swell anywhere from the UK to Morocco, let us know how it was!
