Koa Rothman has had a pretty spectacular year, winning two categories at the 2014 Billabong XXL Awards last week, including Wipeout of the Year and Tube of The Year, and they both occurred on the same wave! He has also racked up a shed load of barrels during that time and the video below this article, showcases some of the highs and lows of his tube time.
Probably the most talked about, admired and scariest out of the lot of them is his insane ride at Teahupoo that won the XXL Awards for him, when his pal Laird Hamilton launched him into the monster behemoth of a wave. (With friends like that who needs enemies!) It rapidly goes from spectacular to horrific in the blink of an eye.
With the title “A Few Barrels” you may imagine a relaxed clip of Koa tucking into a few at his local beach, but this is a collection of some of the most committed tube riding we have seen in a while. In fact there are a couple of moments when it doesn’t look like Koa can make the drop, but he miraculously regains control. In particular at 1.12 minutes into the clip, Koa is momentarily freefalling facedown, with all his weight beyond the board, and then somehow he eases the board below him and next thing is properly slotted.
Enjoy this quality video below and let us know if you feel it was right to award Koa with the Tube of the Year and Wipeout of The Year on the same wave?
