Cal Major is a girl on a mission. Not only has she set herself the challenge of paddling her SUP the entire length of the Cornish Coast, she is also raising awareness of plastic pollution in the UK seas along the way. Cal will be setting off to Paddle Against Plastic from Wembury on the 30th of July and finishing on the 20th of August in Croyde, North Devon, the distance is the equal to 10 marathons.
No small feat considering Cal is a recreational paddleboarder, who has never been involved in distance paddling before. In return for her efforts, Cal is challenging the public not to buy a single plastic water bottle for the whole of the summer and instead encouraging people to use a sustainable refillable alternative. In the UK alone, a staggering 13 billion plastic bottle are used each year and with plastic pollution on our beaches increasing by 180% in the last 2 decades, it is easy to see what a difference we can all make to this problem.
Along the way, Cal will be joining with regional reps from Surfers Against Sewage and meeting with local communities to talk about the challenge and lead beach cleans, as well as stopping off at the SAS tent at Boardmasters Festival in Newquay between the 10th and 14th of August. The schedule for Cal’s paddle and beach cleans can be found below along with the official Paddle Against Plastic video and anyone who would like to join Cal to paddle sections of the journey are being welcomed. You can follow Cal’s progress at Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and start making a difference by ditching the plastic bottles this summer. Good effort Cal and good luck with the challenge.
