Stand Up Paddleboarding is not only one of the fastest growing watersports, it also contributed to the 20% of boating casualties in the USA in 2013 (according to the US Coastguard). It is for this reason, that anyone who is new to the sport, or are thinking of giving it a go, should follow a few basic safety guidelines and take some basic training. A short animated video released by the American Canoe Association has some brilliant tips and advice to staying safe whilst out on your SUP.
The ACA video, whilst not comprehensive, gives some very sound advice with 10 things to consider when journeying out on your Paddleboard. Some things to consider and that will quite possibly save your life are, not paddling under the influence of drink and drugs, wearing a Personal Flotation Device and always making a paddling plan before setting off.
The advice in the video is worth considering, even by experienced paddlers and although fantastic advice for novice paddleboarders, this message should also go hand in hand with a few lessons from an accredited SUP instructor. The amusing animation and lighthearted music help to spread the important messages within this cartoon, without being patronising.
