In a previous article we already alluded to the fact that the sponsorship differences between Surfing and Bodyboarding is huge, and this is further bolstered by the announcement that the overall sponsor for the 2014 ASP Tour is going to be Samsung. Meanwhile Kellogg’s, Pepsi and a few Bodyboard companies are propping up the Bodyboard pipe challenge.
It is strange that both sports are showing signs of moving away from in house sponsorship by the companies that make so much money from the sports, maybe profits are more important to these faceless corporations? The huge corporate names especially in surfing, whilst adding their weight to individual events, have failed to take up the overall sponsorship baton. Although any money is good money, what interest does Samsung, Kelloggs and Pepsi really have in our sports?
The Samsung deal must be a serious game changer for the sport of Surfing, the technology breakthrough the sport has been waiting for? The live broadcasts for a start must surely profit from the media expertise of this giant global electronic company.
Hopefully the sport of Bodyboarding will benefit somehow from the Samsung deal or will be able to fight for some bigger sponsors, because whatever your view on any sport, the fans around the world deserve to be able to keep up to speed with events and competitions. Let us know if you think Samsung sponsoring the ASP World Tour is a good thing, or do you feel the overall Tour sponsorship should have the backing of a major name from the Surf Industry?
