Western Australia and the famous spot of Margaret River wait with baited breath for the arrival of the ASP World Tour in the coming week and the start of the 2014 Drug Aware Margaret River Pro. The forecast isn’t looking particularly favourable for perfect Marg conditions but you can be assured of a tight fought competition nonetheless, as the waiting period begins on April 2nd.
The second stop on this year’s tour sees Gabriel Medina heading the leader board but he can expect tough competition from local boy and previous event winner Taj Burrow as well as 2012 winner John John Florence. Unfortunately the 1985 winner Mark Occhilupo, who was due to compete as a wildcard entry has had to withdraw due to a back injury.
Margaret River’s surf break (sometimes known as Surfers point) is famed for its lefthanders that wind down the reef and the monstrous size the place can cope with. Unfortunately we are unlikely to see 20-foot+ waves for the event with the forecast predicting waves more in the region of 3-4 ft. With the weakening conditions forecast, the contest is definitely wide open and there is a chance for the goofy footers to shine.
