Bethany Hamilton’s inspiring story is well documented and known to people even outside of the sport of Surfing, her disability from the shark attack all those years ago has never held her back and is proven by her recent win at the Women’s Pipeline Pro last month. It is with great surprise then that many people have never heard of a young man whose story is just as rousing and inspirational, he is Derek Rabelo the blind Brazilian Surfer who has taken on pipeline against all odds.
Derek’s Father was a massive fan of the Surfing legend Derek Ho, so much so that he dreamed of his son one day becoming a superstar Surfer and even named him after his idol. When the young Derek was born blind, no one ever believed he would one day take to the sea, and certainly not to go on to surf the famous wave Pipeline.
Derek Rabelo’s remarkable story has been told in a movie called “Beyond Sight” and tracks his journey to Pipeline over 3 years and includes his encounters with some of the biggest names in the sport along the way. Laird Hamilton, Kelly Slater and Rob Machado are just some of the Pro’s that cross paths with Derek and every one of them is left humbled by this remarkable young man’s passion and drive.
With an almost blind faith (no pun intended) Derek puts his belief in God and his own senses and duck dives with absolute precision and even tows into some pretty hefty waves, and finally tackles the wave he has dreamed about all his life. The movie has been put together by Walking On Water Films and written and Directed by Bryan Jennings.
“Beyond Sight” has been showing in theatres since March 7th 2014 and we are lead to believe that by the end of 2014 the movie will reach cinemas in the U.S, Australia and the UK.
