Beyond The Surface is an inspiring and empowering surf documentary that follows India’s first female surfer, Ishita Malaviya on a journey through Southern India. The documentary, filmed by Dave Homcy and directed by Crystal Thornburg-Homcy, has received worldwide critical acclaim and as well as being available on DVD the film is now available to download on Amazon and iTunes.
The movie also features Kate Baldwin, Emi Koch, Liz Clark, Lauren Hill and Crystal Thornburg-Homcy as they make their way across Southern India surfing and meeting local people, whilst sharing stories of surfing, yoga and ecological awareness. Beyond The Surface International is a not for profit organisation that’s mission is to use the sport of surfing to help homeless, underprivileged and orphaned children.
Malaviya only started to surf 7 years ago and only following a chance encounter with a German student travelling through India, but in that short time has secured a Roxy sponsorship deal and now owns and runs her own surf shop. As well as teaching other women to surf, Malaviya is also on a quest to empower women in India, which is said to be the 5th most dangerous place in the world to be female.
The movie is beautifully filmed with stunning and colourful images, showcasing India’s effervescent and rich culture, intermixed with some bewitching surfing by the girls.
