In the last few weeks we’ve reported on big surf from spots including Jaws, Mavericks and even the Algarve, one place we haven’t really mentioned is Ireland, and that’s had more than its fair share of huge swells. Ireland is not only known for its lush green countryside, political troubles and leprechauns, it is revered for its big waves that pound its west coast straight out the Atlantic.
One of the most famous spots is in the county of Sligo and is known as Mullaghmore Head, and over the years has attracted some of the biggest names in UK Surfing and Bodyboarding to take on the macking lefthander. Swells charge out of the Atlantic ocean and at high tide unload over a shallow slab/reef, creating magnificent barrels when the wind is from a southwest direction.
Although the wave is possible to paddle into, it is very often tackled with the riders being towed in by Jet Ski and crowds often gather on the cliffs to watch the spectacle unfold. For those not lucky enough to be in amongst the action there, or even perched on the cliffs above, we have found a great video from the 1st and 2nd of February that has been released by Billabong, who we all know love a bit of XXL action!
