After reporting yesterday on the news that the supermodel Yfke Sturm has been injured in a Jet Surf accident, today we bring you the news that the big wave surfer Shawn Dollar has broken his neck in 4 places, during a surf in California. Shawn is in a stable condition in hospital, where as well as being treated for the injury to his neck, he is also under observation for concussion and trauma to his head.
The accident happened whilst Shawn was surfing an undisclosed reef in central California and was helped from the water by other local surfers, and it was their due to their quick actions that Shawn is expected to make a full recovery in time. Shawn is no stranger to big waves as he currently holds the World Record for the biggest wave surfed after paddling into a 61ft bomb at the offshore reef of Cortes Bank in California, and has made a name for himself at the Titans of Maverick big wave competition.
In a press release earlier, Shawn has said “I’m so grateful for those who were there in my scariest and darkest hour and who acted on my behalf to get me to safety and reach the hospital in time. I’m so thankful I’m alive and present today, being surrounded by my loved ones through this time has been paramount for me. I’m thankful to learn that even with these severe injuries I will make a full recovery. They will be met with challenges, but with my family’s support and community encouragement I will be back in no time.”
We have embedded a video of Shawn’s record breaking wave at Cortes Bank below and would like to wish him a speedy recovery and we look forward to seeing him paddle back out again sometime in the not too distant future.
