The Yeti is a strange mythical beast that resides in the Himalayas, which some claim to have seen and others simply dismiss as a thing of folklore. There is however a Yeti that is very much alive and kicking and without doubt a lot more scary than an oversized hairy guy wandering around in the woods, and that is the break known as The Yeti found off of the Oregon coast of North America.
This spot first came to the Surfing world’s attention around 2009 when it was featured in an issue of Surfer magazine and ever since then little snippets have emerged of the odd combatant tackling the freak of nature. What makes the wave so scary in my eyes is the speed the thing jacks up at and how vertical the take off is, and this is all happening just a few above a nice solid slab. Teahupoo’s spiteful Uncle, on steroids, with a hangover.
The latest proof that this spot exists has come from a group of Bodyboarders who have been powering themselves over the lip with just a pair of flippers and a piece of foam to use as a shield. These gallant spongers are Dave Winchester, Jordan Putland and Chris James, who each deserve a solid pat on the back for slaying the Yeti.
Check out the proof of the session below and watch as the boys throw themselves into the abyss and somehow manage to make it out unscathed. The fact that none of them ended up in traction is a miracle! Let us know if you fancy having a go at The Yeti or is it one of those waves you are quite happy to watch from the comfort of your sofa?
