The Bodyboard world has had a few troublesome years in recent memory, there was the cancellation of the final event of the 2013 World Tour at Fronton and the shortfalls of the IBA that same year. Then we witnessed the emergence of the APB in 2014 but we also saw a reduction the APB’s planned tour stops and the 2015 programme is set to run without an event at Pipeline. It is then, with a raised eyebrow that we now hear that 2015 will witness the sport of Bodyboarding getting another world tour in the shape of the Free Surf Bodyboarding World Tour.
The Free Surf World Tour is the brainchild of former IBA Judge Danny Bycroft and former pro bodyboarder Liam O’Toole and is a tour that will span every continent. The major difference with the Free Surf Bodyboarding Tour is that it is designed to be mobile and react to the best swells hitting each particular continent during the event’s waiting period and will mobilise and move to the best waves, instead of being static at one spot.
Each leg will star 20 riders, 10 that will be selected by the organisers, 5 that are selected by local sponsors and interestingly 5, that are voted to compete by us – the fans.
The FSB Tour was due to get underway with the first event on the continent of Europe in December 2014, but we have not heard anymore news regarding the competition, waiting periods or full line up of entrants.
To find out more information on the Free Surf World Tour, which incidentally is being touted as Bodyboarding’s Revolution, head over to the official FSB website, where you can check out the plans in detail and sign up for email updates. What do you think? Does the Bodyboard world need a second World Tour when just one already struggles so much for publicity and sponsorship and are you excited by the idea of a mobile comp making the best of each swell on each continent?
