We are used to writing about Chris Bertish taking on mountainous waves or putting himself through gruelling SUP record attempts to raise money for children born with cleft palates, but for today Chris has taken a break from these challenges to help a very different cause. Chris has recently become an ambassador for the Two Oceans Aquarium and one of the first things he was able to assist with in his new role was to help return 57 turtles to their natural ocean environment off of Cape Point, South Africa.
Chris makes no bones about his deep connection with the ocean and how he feels at his most calm and content when he is at sea, and during his adventures has shared many brief moments with some of the finest marine animals on the planet. To complete many of his SUP endurance paddles and to win the Mavericks Invitational, Chris has demonstrated on many occasions extreme determination and sheer doggedness, and a refusal to quit when the going gets tough. It is these qualities, many shared by the sea turtles themselves, that makes Chris the perfect ambassador for the aquarium whose mission is ‘to inspire action for the wellbeing of our oceans’.
A stunning video has been released, showing the plight of the loggerhead turtles and Chris helping the Two Oceans Aquarium to release one of the turtles from his paddleboard. You can see the video below and can check out the great work the Two Oceans Aquarium does at their official website here.
