Let’s face it, there is nowhere near enough surfing movies that make it to the big screen, so you may be pleased to hear that it has been announced that 2017 will see the return of Cody Maverick in the sequel to the animated film Surfs Up. In collaboration with WWE Studios, Sony Pictures are bringing back the surfing penguin, who teams up with a bunch of World Wrestling superstars (playing penguins) to hunt down the biggest wave in the world in “Surf’s Up 2: WaveMania”.
The WWE wrestlers adding their voices to the movie are The Undertaker, Mr McMahon, John Cena, Diva Paige and Triple H, who will play the roles of The Hang 5, a musclebound gang of big wave surfing penguins. With Cody alongside, they head off to conquer a spot known as The Trenches, where it is said they will find the biggest waves in the world. Quite why wrestling stars have been chosen over real surfers is unclear, you may remember Rob Machado and Kelly Slater played themselves in the original film.
The first Surf’s Up film was released 10 years ago, grossing just under $150 million at the box office. What did you think of the original Surf’s Up, do you think it is about time for a sequel and what are your thoughts on using WWE stars in the film?
