After a week of speculation it has now been confirmed that Stephanie Gilmore will definitely miss the Oi Rio Pro following the injury she received during a free surf, between heats at the Drug Aware Pro. Stephanie made the announcement on her social media channels and it was then confirmed in a statement on the World Surf League website.
Whilst free surfing Stephanie went over the falls with a wave and pencil dropped into the shallows, suffering what was initially thought to be a hairline fracture, but on returning home for further medical advice it was discovered that in fact, the world number one had sustained multiple fractures to the fibula and tibia as well as bruising to the knee. The injury is a huge blow to Stephanie’s title defence and will see her fall further away from tour leader Carissa Mooore and second placed Courtney Conlogue.
As they say, one person’s misery can be another persons joy, and Stephanie’s withdrawal has now opened the door for the Australian Keely Andrew who now faces a tough first round heat against Tyler Wright and Coco Ho. The Oi Rio Pro in Rio de Janeiro gets underway on the 11th of May and you can stay updated, tweak dream teams and follow developments at the Quiksilver Ceremonial over at the official WSL website. In the meantime let us know if you have ever sustained any injuries surfing and can you see Stephanie bouncing back and securing a seventh world title this season?
