Newport Wedge is not a place where you regularly see Surfers, let alone Paddleboarders, for the majority of the time it is a playground for Skimboarders and Bodyboarders. When a Paddleboarder does tackle the backbreaking wave, news of their escapades travel fast and before long a video becomes available.
On July 6th 2014 one such hero paddled out and tackled the beach break on his SUP, a guy by the name of Daniel Hughes. The wave was getting on for nearly triple overhead and somehow Daniel managed to keep a lid on his emotions and control the adrenaline and scored himself a bomb.
The video gradually builds up to the one wave we get to see Daniel catch and is accompanied by gasps and cheers from the watching crowd as he attempts to drop in on the pounding beach break. You have to feel for the unfortunate Daniel as the final wave we see crashes down on him and his SUP as he gets caught on the inside.
The video and the antics of Daniel Hughes at The Newport Wedge can be seen in the video below, when you have taken a look be sure to let us know if you think Paddleboarders have a place at The Wedge and what you think of Daniels brave efforts?
