The Wedge at Newport, California is one of those waves that everyone knows about and one that holds the fascination of wave riders and the general public alike. When it’s on, huge crowds gather to watch the bodysurfers, bodyboarders and surfers throw themselves into the spectacular man made wave, which more often than not ends with a closeout or brutal wipeout. Now a documentary, called The Dirty Old Wedge has been released on iTunes, which charts the rise of The Wedge and the crew of bodysurfers who have made the wave their home.
Starring the likes of Mark Cunningham, Mike Stewart, Tom Kennedy and Keith Malloy, Dirty Old Wedge, recounts the history of the incredible wave and the local bodysurfers who dominated the spot and were known as the Wedge Crew. Featuring previously unseen footage dating back to the 1950’s, the movie has received rave reviews and explains the close knit bonds between the original bodysurfers and the rivalries and conflicts when the bodyboarders started to invade the spot.
