Drones are becoming a common sight hovering above any session worth talking about, so when The Wedge lit up last week, it would have been a safe bet to say there would be at least one capturing the action from the skies. In fact there were quite a few of the loudly buzzing copters whizzing back and forth, but one unfortunate drone ended up in one of the biggest wipeouts of the day.
The drone in question was quite happily going about its business and capturing the days big waves, huge crowds and back breaking wipeouts as The Wedge lit up and was mobbed by kamikaze wave riders. All of a sudden a US Coastguard helicopter arrived on the scene and dwarfed the tiny drones in the sky.
To the delight of the crowd on the beach, the full size copter completed a couple of passes when suddenly the force of the downdraft flipped one drone into a spin and sent it dropping like a stone into the ocean and the whomping surf! Although the crowd cheered the pilot of the drone must have been left feeling as sick as a parrot and there is no news how the drone fared or if it was even recovered.
Below the article are a couple of clips of the drone wipeout from different perspectives and we would drove to hear what you think. Are drones becoming a frustrating noisy menace or do you feel sorry for the drone pilot and like to see them hovering above the surf when you are out?
