The 2014/2015 Eddie Aikau Contest has begun it’s waiting period and big wave surfing fans wait with bated breath to see if, in its 30th year, the competition will run for just the ninth time. The waiting period for this seasons Eddie contest opened on the 1st of December and runs until February 28th 2015, but although open for nearly 3 months the 20 foot open ocean swells needed for the competition to go ahead are few and far between.
The competition is always held at Waimea Bay on the North Shore and when the obligatory 20 foot swells squeeze into the bay, the resultant wave faces translate to 30 – 40 foot. This years official opening ceremony will be held at Waimea Bay on Thursday (December 4th) and will be attended by Eddie Aikau’s family and the invited competitors.
Previous winners of the Eddie Aikau memorial contest include Clyde Aikau (Eddie’s Brother), Kelly Slater, Bruce Irons and Greg Long who won the last time time the contest ran back in 2009/2010. This years invitees include Jamie O’Brien, Tom Carroll, Sunny Garcia and John John Florence.
