We have been raving about the quality and durability of Elliot Brown watches for some time now and it seems we aren’t the only ones who recognise the credentials of these fine timepieces. Elliot Brown have today have been named as the official timekeeper of the Clipper 2015/16 Round the World Yacht Race. The Clipper, is the worlds longest ocean race and when it gets underway on August 30th, the competing skippers and crew will be wearing Elliot Brown watches.
The Clipper Round the World Race will take 11 months to run it’s course and the crews, yachts and watches will cover 40 000 nautical miles as they circumnavigate the globe, so it is essential the crews can rely on accurate timekeeping and the watches can stand the test of time. We have reviewed the Elliot Brown Bloxworth watch over the past year and have been pretty brutal in the treatment of the watch, which has simply shrugged off the abuse we have thrown at it, and we believe they will easily cope with the rigours of the Clipper race.
In celebration at being picked as the official timekeeper, Elliot Brown have released 1000 limited edition Clipper Race Crew Canford watches, with a special edition individually numbered engraved case back and a premium black leather deployment strap as well as a second premium canvas strap with detailed red stitching. All Elliot Brown watches feature a triple seal system, which keep dust and water ingress at bay along with a shock-protected Swiss movement and each watch is individually tested to a depth of 200m. Each Clipper Race Crew watch is packaged with a numbered commemorative insert and two screwdrivers for strap changing and are available to pre order now at £395 for delivery in March 2016.
Earlier this afternoon we managed to catch up with Ian Elliot from Elliot Brown who told us that the Timekeeper deal came about in a very short space of time and it has been frantic six weeks creating the stunning limited edition timepiece as Ian explains below
29th May 2015 – we received a call from David Cusworth, Director at Clipper Ventures. “Saw your watches in Snow & Rock and hadn’t seen them before. They appear to be exactly what we need for our crew members on their 40,000 mile ocean race because you have the toughest watches and we run the toughest race – can we talk?”
We met the next day as we were painfully aware that timing was against us and two days later we presented our proposal to the CEO of Clipper Ventures and once all the difficult questions had been asked, we realised our brands had a good deal in common. Spreading a spirit of adventure amongst ordinary people.
We needed to create a gorgeous, bespoke limited edition watch but as is always the challenge with any product partnership is how to successfully execute the co-branding so the end result looked classy and desirable – not over branded promotional merchandise that’s had plenty of “make my logo bigger cream” applied. (have you ever seen that youtube clip – it’s hilarious) That’s when working with like minded people really comes to the fore as we shared a desire to create a special watch first and foremost with the branding taking a secondary role. There’s a great feeling about owning and wearing a unique watch that only those who know, know what it is.
So we set about ideas that would give a subtle nautical nod of the cap and decided on a series of red and green secondary hour markers that ape the channel lights for port and starboard when entering a port – something we’re very familiar with ourselves being based on the edge of Poole Harbour. The resulting watch hides it’s durability and to a large extent it’s special edition credentials but that’s what makes it special.
The case back features deep etching for “Crew Edition”, the Clipper Round the World identity and limited numbered plaque in our typically detailed Elliot Brown style. It’s flippin’ gorgeous in the flesh!
It’s taken a total of 6 weeks from start to launch, the details are thrashed out, the limited edition watch has been designed and the first one produced, lifestyle and studio photography complete, adverts created and signed off, press releases written and agreed and today we go live.
Mountains have literally been moved to create this bespoke ltd edition with a subtle nautical nod of the cap in less than a month. I think ‘agility’ was one of those fancy words we originally used in our business plan – actually what we should have said was ‘not afraid to work nights’.
It’s a privilege to be working with such a prestigious organisation – who take ‘everyday people’ with a spirit of adventure from all walks of life, and turn them into yachtsmen and women capable of circumnavigating the globe in a race over 40,000 miles and 11 months – surely one of the toughest challenges in the natural world.
Special edition watches are being worn by skippers and crew and we’ll be appointing one crew member as our ambassador for the entire circumnavigation. Only after looking at the course map do you realise just what an extraordinarily huge thing this is. The first leg is to Rio non stop.. London to South America would do it for most people – that’s just leg 1 of 8. The race returns to London in July 2016.
We finished the photo shoot yesterday, Cheers!
