Surfer and Bodyboard rivalry is widespread across the globe, but there is probably nowhere on the planet where the different wave riding disciplines gel and harmonise so well together as they do in Ireland. Episode 17 of Fergal Smith’s Growing series, features Fergal and his pals, taking on some waves of serious consequence on both the sponge and the resin and embracing both craft depending on the type of wave and conditions they are facing.
Answering the question Stick or Lid, the Irish regulars appreciate that at different times and in different waves both can be used and each have a valid reason for being ridden depending on the situation. What is the point in sitting out in the line-up for hours on a Surfboard and only picking off the odd one, when you can snag nearly every one on a Sponge.
In the video you can see both the Surfboard and Bodyboard being ridden equally as well and both getting some deep tube time! There is also a mention and a nod to Mickey Smith who discovered many of the waves in the clip and did this whilst sliding into them on his Bodyboard. A brilliant 6 minute video of harmony and respect and again showing that Ireland really is the land of a thousand welcomes. Do you ride both a Surfboard and Bodyboard depending on conditions, or are you strictly a one style rider?
