Over the past few weeks I have been getting to grips with a G-Form Xtreme iPhone 5/5S case, designed to withstand the mishaps and abuse of everyday life and an ideal case to offer your phone protection between Surfs. The secret ingredient to these cases is XRD, which is a clever piece of modular technology that stiffens and hardens on impact.
It is important to point out, that phone protection is a tiny part of what G-Form have to offer, not only do they make cases to protect a variety of phones and tablets they also provide protection equipment to many different disciplines of sport including snowboarding, skateboarding, biking and stunt work! It is rumoured that G-Form shin pads are even being worn at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
The beauty of XRD is that it is extremely lightweight and completely flexible and pliable, it only becomes hardened under impact and so makes a perfect choice for use in sport protection. G-Form are so confident of their product, that during a recent event I attended, they have made a wine bottle bag out of XRD and invited us all to drop and lob the bag around, and I’m pleased to report the bottle remained intact throughout.
I was given a choice of colour on the case I trialled and opted for the red and black because as a kid I wished I was Spiderman and the patterning and colour scheme reminded me of Spidey’s suit! There are actually 7 colours available including yellow, pink, silver, a solid black version or a distinctive blue and black option.
The first thing I noticed about the case was how soft it was to the touch and how deceptively light it was. The XRD protection definitely makes the case seem a little more bulky than your average sleeve, but then the cushioning and protection offered has to come at a price.
The Xtreme case actually comes in two parts, with an inner sleeve that fits tightly inside the XRD case and hosts the buttons for operating the phone and the outer softer case that provides the protection. With the case fitted all the ports are still easily accessible and the buttons all function perfectly well.
Being the clumsy buffoon I am, I have dropped the phone a couple of times over the past fortnight and I am pleased to say my phone has survived each time. That isn’t to say the phone would have broken with any other case on there, but the rugged appearance and durable feel of the Xtreme case definitely gave me a sense of security and a belief in the product.
A couple of minor points to bring up are, that after using a skin type case for a while now the sudden increase in size of the G-Form case was a bit alien at first and it did make the phone seem bulky when putting it in my pocket. It is also a shame that G-form haven’t as yet, designed a solid case that completely encompasses the whole phone including the screen or even gone down the route of a fully waterproof and shockproof case.
With all that said, the G-Form Xtreme XRD case is more than substantial for everyday use and for downtime between Surf’s and will offer plenty of protection when romping in the wilderness searching for your next secret spot to Surf.
