Gabriel Medina has added a new surfboard to his quiver and it’s not the tail, the volume or the rocker that has got people talking, it is the technology that is built within the board that has divided opinions. The Samsung Galaxy Surfboard is a board that houses Gabriel’s Samsung phone and allows him to stay connected with his coaching team and fans whilst out in the surf.
Samsung have released an a video showing Medina putting the board through it’s paces and explaining that when a pro surfer paddles out into battle, it is a lonely time and they are completely disconnected from their fans and coaching team. The Galaxy surfboard, allows Gabriel to receive real time information about swell conditions, as well as allowing him to stay connected and receive real time social media posts and coaching tips from his dad.
Whilst there is no doubt the technology is extremely clever and could play a huge role in a pro surfers training regime, the last thing I would want is a board that is beeping and flashing at me whilst I am in the water. When I go surfing it is a chance to paddle away from the grind of everyday life and the constant intrusion of technology, I don’t want to start getting hassled when I’m in the lineup! You can see the impressive Samsung Galaxy Surfboard in the video below and we would love to hear if you would want a connected surfboard or are you like me and think this sort of technology should stay well and truly locked in the glovebox whilst you are surfing?
