Congratulations have to go to Gabriel Medina, the first Brazilian to take the ASP World Surfing title, for what has been a comprehensive and dominate season for him. With 3 wins and 9 top ten finishes in total and finishing second at the Pipe Masters, Gabriel certainly has found himself a winning formula. Some of this can be attributed to his board set up and in particular the FCS II Performer fins that he has used at every stop on the tour.
Gabriel started using the large size Performer fins at the start of the 2014 season, and remained with them throughout, due to their ability to perform so well with every type of wave the Pro’s encounter at the different stops on the Tour. The only changes Medina made to the fin set up was to switch between the Performance Core Carbon and Performance Core fins, as and when conditions dictated and the amount of flex he wanted from the fin.
So does a set of fins make that much difference? Well, both Gabriel and Stephanie Gilmore, the current world title holders were using FCS II throughout the season and there have been 5 world titles collected by Surfers using the FCS II fin system. Maybe there is something in it then! Do you think Gabriel’s first world title was helped by his FCS II fin set up or purely down to skill alone? Are you using the FCS II Performer and if so what do you think of them, have they improved your performance?
