They say if you live by the sword, you die by the sword – much like if you ride massive great waves, sooner or later you are going to take a ferocious wipeout. That is exactly what has happened to Garrett McNamara, who was seriously injured earlier during a free surf at Mavericks. The famous big wave charger, suffered a dislocated shoulder during the wipeout, which saw him bounce and skim across the wave face like a rag doll.
Garrett has had more than his fair share of wipeouts and is famed for charging giant Nazare on his Mercedes surfboard, but the wipeout he endured at Half Moon Bay is one of the worst wipeouts we have ever seen. As he paddled into the top of the wave, the wind seemed to momentarily lift the front of his board and as he tried to compensate was pitched forward onto the wave, but the angle and speed he was travelling meant he just bounced like a skimming stone. In the video, embedded below you can see that G-Mac bounced at least twice the length of his board.
It has been reported that Garrett, who is a Titans of Mavericks Alternate has undergone surgery on his shoulder, and will mean he will surely miss the Titans competition which closes on March 31st and is currently on alert for a swell potentially big enough run the event. Although he won’t be lifting the trophy at Mavericks this year, he must be in with a shot at Wipeout of the Year. Check out the horrific wipeout below.
