Everywhere we hear about lately seems to be getting some of the best swell in living memory, right now the UK is bearing the brunt of Storm Imogen and mythical surf breaks have suddenly awoken, Mavericks is said to have had the best swell ever in the last week and now Quiksilver have issued a Green alert for the Eddie Would Go competition at Waimea Bay. The alert signals the need to get ready for the Eddie as the event will definitely run on Wednesday 10th of February.
The competition in memory of the legendary waterman and lifeguard Eddie Aikau, only runs when waves with a face of 40 foot are forecast to break for an 8 hour period. These occasions are few and far between, the event has only actually been held 8 times in its 30 year existence and last ran in 2009 when the highly respected crown went to Greg Long.
There were some who criticised Quiksilver for not running the Eddie Would Go last week, but they were quick to point out that although conditions were huge, the swell did not hold the size for the required 8 hour period. The new swell due to hit the North Shore of O’ahu is looking like it will peak in the early hours of Thursday, meaning the event will run with a building swell. Full details and the link to the live feed can be found at the Eddie Would Go Quiksilver page here.
