When the Teva Original Universal Sandals turned up in the Surf-Report office a couple of weeks ago, the boss asked me take look at them and put them through their paces. A few years back I had a pair of Teva sandals that I loved so much, I ended up destroying them from virtually living in them, so I was more than up for the challenge!
The Teva Original Universal are an evolution of the very first Teva sandals that were created nearly 30 years ago by Mark Thatcher whilst he was working as a guide in the Grand Canyon. From humble beginnings, and with plenty of experience the new Original Universal sandals have been crafted to ensure perfect comfort.
The sandals I have been getting hands on with are the blue/green model, but there are actually 7 different styles available. The Original Universal sandals retail for £35, which is slightly dearer than some other brands, but you get what you pay for and if my last pair are anything to go by, I expect many more years use out of them.
From the moment you pick up these sandals and hold them, you will be struck by how light they are, making them the ideal item of footwear to take on your travels. We also had the Teva Terra FI 4 in for review and the Original Universals weigh roughly half of what the Terra sandals do.
There is of course a compromise though, the fact they are much lighter is because the sole of the sandal features a rubber outsole with an EVA topsole whereas the Terra is made wholly from heavy duty Spider Rubber. This means, although you can smash your way across rugged ground in the Originals, the construction does not feel as robust as the Terra.
As before, the comfort offered by these sandals is apparent from the moment you slip them on. The OU’s have 2 points of adjustment, the toe strap and the ankle strap, and the nylon webbing is comfortable against bare skin and holds the sandal tight to the foot.
The footbed of the sandal is comfy and soft to the touch and I honestly believe I could walk as far in the Original Universals as I could my favourite pair of trainers. The beauty of the EVA topsole is that over time your sandals will actually mould to your own foot and they get comfier every time you wear them!
The clever guys and girls over at Teva have also added a Microban zinc-based anti-microbial treatment to the sole of the sandal and this fights off unpleasant odours, keeping your Teva’s feeling fresh.
I put the Universal’s through their paces at a local beach where it is not possible to walk in bare feet without considerable pain. The pebbles on the beach are of a size that makes it impossible to walk in any other way that that of a withered and decrepit old man. However equipped with my trusty Original Universal’s on, I was able to walk at a normal pace and felt no discomfort at all. Much to my delight!
The underneath of the sandal reveals a criss-cross triangular pattern on the sole and I found this perfectly adequate on all surfaces and even felt happy walking on some seaweed-covered rocks along the shore. The fact they are so light also means that they are ideal for water use and I feel confident I would be able to swim with the Original Universal on my feet without any problem.
So if you are looking for a comfy and stylish pair of sandals for this summer and are looking for something that will still be going strong for years to come, then you need look further than the Teva Original Universal.
