One of the most fundamental and important things to master on a SUP when Surfing waves is the bottom turn, not only does it help set you up for riding the wall of the wave on your rail, it also helps maintain speed and gives drive. It is an essential part of SUP Surfing and we have found a great instructional video courtesy of SUP TV, BIC SUP and ACA SUP Instructor Jimmy Blakeney.
The video shows the bottom turn being performed on all sizes of waves and Jimmy makes it quite clear that the turn should only be attempted on the flat in front of the wave and not on the face. Jimmy also points out the importance of stepping back to assist in the turn and help to set the rail.
The clip is well worth watching a couple of times to study the foot placement and the necessary bended knees, and we feel this is one of the best instructional bottom turn videos we have seen. Get out there and get practising and let us know how you get on and if you would like us to hunt down any other practical instructional videos?
