How to start Paddleboarding, the basics to stand up

How To Stand Up Paddleboard Video By Michael Adams / February 4, 2014
  • A+ A-

Paddleboarding is a sport that is rapidly growing in followers every year and although relatively straightforward and low impact on the participant, there are definitely some hints and tips that will help the novice Paddler. Most people can grasp the basic skills pretty quickly but it’s not just a matter of learning to stand up and keeping balance.

There are many things to consider when first starting out, such as where to stand on the board, how to stand up and how to start moving about. There is no way we could communicate all these things via this article so we have taken the confusion out of the issue and found an excellent instructional video.

Starring John Denney who is a keen paddler and is considered by some as a pioneer of the sport and has many credits to his name. He has worked on many films including Step into Liquid and Riding Giants and towed in Jaws with Laird Hamilton, so we think he is more than qualified to help you get started!

John will visually take you through the basics and we feel he has pretty much got it covered, although the only thing we would add to his instructions is when you start paddling Don’t look at your feet! It is very important that you keep your eyes and focus outward and in the direction of travel, your feet aren’t going anywhere so you don’t need to keep an eye on them!
