On June the 20th 2015 during International Surfing Day, Huntington Beach California will witness an attempt to break two surfing world records. The first will be the ‘Worlds Largest Surfboard’ and the second ‘The most people riding a Surfboard’. The Epic Big Board Ride is being organised by Surf City USA and there is even a chance that you could be a part of the team riding the giant surfboard.
The event will take place as part of the celebrations for International Surfing Day and will be happening on the South side of Huntington Beach Pier between 9am and 12pm. The event is free to watch and also includes surf lessons, beach cleans, BBQ’s as well as the opportunity to browse the Vendor Village and witness live entertainment at the Pier Plaza Amphitheatre.
Westerly Marine boat builders and Rhode Island’s mouldCAM are currently shaping the surfboard in question, and it is a scaled up version of a Nev Hyman board shaped for local surfer Brett Simpson. The surfboard is over 42 feet long, 11 feet wide and 16 inches thick and will hopefully carry 60 surfers to the record next month. The organisers are giving everyone the chance to be a part of the record-breaking surf crew by entering the Epic Wave Contest here.
To secure the world record for the most people riding a surfboard (which is currently 47), the team of 60 surfers must pick up a wave and ride if for ten seconds, anyone left standing at the end of the time will be counted and included in the record attempt. If you are in the area why not get down there to not only witness this amazing attempt, but also to help with the countdown when the team snag a wave?
