Yesterday we told you about the huge swells that have been hitting California this week and of Laird Hamilton heroically shooting the pier at Malibu. Today we move a little further South to take a look at the huge waves that have been hitting Newport and in particular The Wedge. Hurricane Marie has been responsible for serving up some of the biggest surf that California has seen in 10 years and it seems that most of the local population have turned out to witness the massive surf in California.
To give our followers a feel for the size and raw power of the huge hurricane swell, we bring you our favourite three clips from The Wedge over the last few days. Although the massive swell has brought a great deal of pleasure to onlookers and wave riders alike there have been multiple reports of dozens of rescues of swimmers and surfers in distress
Even Laird Hamilton ended up rescuing one novice Surfer who had found himself wildly out of his depth, quite literally, during the epic session at Malibu and on Tuesday morning Los Angeles County Lifeguards retrieved an unidentified Surfer from the water who had unfortunately died in the big surf. There has also been costal flooding at Seal Beach with many areas still on alert.
As we enter Friday the swell from Marie is subsiding but we are expecting to see waves at The Wedge still peaking at double overhead and you can watch the action live by heading over to the live cam via Surfline. The three videos of the thrills and spills at Newport over the last few days are below, let us know which is your favourite and if you have managed to get wet courtesy of Marie at all?
