With the Winter Olympics getting underway in Sochi this week, it is with a fantastic sense of timing that a video has appeared on the web, of a crew of Paddleboarders who have taken their SUP’s out on the slopes and have maybe found a new discipline for future Olympic games? Whilst it doesn’t have the finesse of the Figure Skating or the explosive speed of the Boardercross, it definitely looks like it could be an excuse for a giggle.
The video below shows the group of SUPboarders/SnowSUPer’s taking to the snow with varying degrees of success and although they are not shredding the slopes with arcing carves and powder spraying slashes, they do manage to straight-line a few and actually make a couple of run’s. The fact they are riding thick, inflatable boards doesn’t really help their cause and we are left wondering if anyone will take this seriously and try to fine tune the boards and create more of a biting rail.
It took a little while for Snowboarding to be accepted by the Skiing community, but now is one of the biggest draws at the Winter Olympics and is seen on every slope around the world – Could this new sport ever evolve and catch on like Snowboarding did? We have embedded the slightly surreal video below, Have a look and let us know if you can see a future for Paddleboards on the slopes?
