A little while back we brought you news on the proposed Wavegarden pool in the UK countryside near Bristol, today we report on a different kind of wave pool that can be found in Sukabumi City in West Java. The pool has been created by a man that simply is known as Fred and he has taken the sport of surfing to impoverished kids miles from the ocean.
Fred has been experimenting with wave pool concepts for a little while now and one of his earliest creations was powered by a rope tied to the back axle of a car, but in this latest pool the waves generated are purely through human power and a 22hp generator alone.
Whilst the waves aren’t barrelling gems that reel for miles, they are absolutely perfect for beginners and the pleasure and enjoyment the local kids derive from this simple pool is plain for all to see. Some of the groms are grasping the concept of turning and one little ripper rides his wave straight into the wall at the far end of the tank!
Obviously a wipeout against the wall could be pretty harsh but in these days of heavy-handed health and safety it is great to see these kids enjoying pure unadulterated fun. In fact Fred has probably got quite a profitable ding repair business on the side!
Enjoy the video below and see how Fred has brought joy to these children’s lives and has the saying “Only a Surfer knows the feeling” ever been any more relevant?
