I have a 12’6 SUP in my quiver and while it is a great downwinder board and always a lot of fun on the flat, it is about as manoeuvrable as a battleship with a rusted up rudder, and the last thing I would do is take it out and surf head high waves on it. It doesn’t seem to worry a guy called Jon D who managed to get barrelled on his 12’6 Paddleboard, although it ultimately had disastrous consequences as he now has two 6’3 paddleboards in his collection!
Jon was out playing on a swell thrown up by Cyclone Marcia and was enjoying the sunset session on his 12’6 Lahui Kai Race Paddleboard when the opportunity to tuck in and get shacked presented itself to him. Although he managed to get himself and the giant board in the tube, the resultant tumble managed to rip his paddleboard into two bits!
It must have been some wipeout to manage to snap his SUP in two and the whole incident was captured on a board mounted camera, including the moment Jon swims back to collect the front half, with the rear bit of the board still leashed to him. Fair play to Jon on firstly catching a few waves on his race board, but secondly for managing to get pitted and then snapping a paddleboard in half. Good effort! Have you ever managed to snap a SUP and do you take a race board out to catch a few waves? The clip of Jon getting shacked and breaking his board is featured below.
