The 2015 Nixon Surf Challenge has now drawn to a close with Jonathan Gonzalez collecting the win for Overall Performance, over ten years after first scooping the accolade in San Sebastian. The Nixon Surf Challenge has this year visited the shores of Hainan in the South China Sea and has been a far cry from the freezing temperatures the competitors endured in 2014 when the event visited the Kamchatka region in Russia.
In conjunction with Reef, Monster Energy and Lomography, the format of the competition is simple, the surfers explore unridden territories and then go out and surf their socks off in a kind of free surf, but at the same time are being judged by their fellow competitors. The standard was extremely high from all involved but it was Gonzalez’s clinical style and huge spraying fantails that really impressed his peers.
It was the 2013 event winner, Vincent Duvignac who collected the award for ‘Best Trick’ after leaving it until the last day to smash out a perfect 360 to revert. The official event video (directed by Alex Laurel) is embedded below where you can see all the highlights from the five-day contest in Hainan. Do you like the idea of this peer voted competition and have you ever been lucky enough to surf the unexplored waters of China?
