The spot of Teahupoo is both feared and admired the world over and is on just about every Surfers bucket list of waves they must Surf. Chopes is drooled over every single day by wave riders globally, with comments like “I would love to surf there” and “I would tear that wave up”, but chances are, most will never ever get there and of those that do, a fair percentage will sit in the channel,to scared to paddle into the back breaking wave. This makes the fact that a 12 year old lad by the name of Kauli Vaast, who has been Surfing Teahupoo 5 times the size of him, seem so jaw droppingly impressive.
Kitted out with a helmet and the courage of a bear, young Kauli surfs the wave with a confidence and authority that you wouldn’t normally find in a kid who hasn’t even touched teenage years. In face most lads of a similar age are hooked up to a games console or scuffing the knees out of their trousers playing football.
With Teahupoo ticked off at such a young age, the future obviously bodes well for Master Kauli and we will no doubt be hearing more from him over the next few years. One thing that does spring to mind though, is, if you are riding Chopes at 12 years old, what comes next? Shipsterns? Ours? Jaws? Mavericks? When I was a mere grom, we were over the moon if we could snag a lift to the next town to Surf!
In case you still can’t quite believe it, the video of Kauli out at Teahupoo is embedded below this article, and I feel sure you will be impressed. Take a look and let us know what spot you think the heroic youngster should take on next and what was the scariest wave you had tackled by the age of 12?
