There have been times when we have all had a scary moment in the sea, maybe pinned down by a wave for a few seconds longer than we are used to or a close encounter with some rocks, things can go wrong very quickly. We have found a video of a Kayaker who finds herself in trouble on some rocks after getting caught by a wave and by some small miracle, she lives to tell the tale and ride another day.
Whilst the girl in the Kayak is wearing the appropriate helmet and life vest it is hard to understand quite why she would chose to paddle out or surf so near the rocks where there are only rolling whitewater waves without faces. The closed out wave is a recipe for disaster and can only steam roller its way into shore.
The Kayaker gets picked up by the whitewater and hurled into the rocks, temporarily disappearing from view. Somehow she clambers from the Kayak and scrambles onto the rocks. It is here she makes her second mistake. Although she quite rightly ditched the Kayak, she should have kept going and tried to get to higher ground because the following wave smothers her and washes her from the safety of her perch.
The video is pretty harrowing to watch, but as far as we are aware other than a little bit of damaged pride the Kayaker was able to walk away from the incident and will go on to ride another wave. My old Nan used to say, “Pain related learning is the best type of learning!” Let us know if you have ever found yourself in a similar position and if you think this particular Kayaker made an error of judgement riding waves here?
