To see a humpback whale breach in it’s natural environment must be one of the most spectacular things to ever witness, but two kayakers in Moss Landing, California have had a lucky escape when one humpback nearly landed on them earlier this week.
The area is extremely popular with whale watchers and the kayakers in question were paddling amongst a group of feeding humpback whales, when suddenly one breached alongside them and swamped their kayak, sending the pair into the water. Larry Plants, who was also enjoying watching the whales from a nearby Sanctuary Cruises boat, captured the footage, which can be seen embedded below.
The footage has caused much debate as to whether the kayakers should have been that close to the feeding whales and whether it is right for us humans to obsessively invade the natural space of these impressive animals, either way luckily neither the whale or the kayakers were injured. Do you think it is wrong to encroach on the lives of marine animals as the whale watchers were, or do you think we can all coexist alongside each other so long as we are respectful and considerate?
