Tucking into a cavernous mega barrel at Teahupoo, hanging onto the bar of a kite wouldn’t appeal to most people, but double world title winner Keahi de Aboitiz has been getting his kicks doing just that. Australian Keahi, who grew up surfing Noosa, is an all round waterman, and is rapidly making a name for himself as one of the best kiters in the world who excels in big waves.
Wrestling with his strapless board, Keahi didn’t just drop in and half heartedly hover under the lip, he grabbed a rail, tucked in and got well and truly kegged over and over again. Getting deep at Chopes on a surfboard is in art in itself – adding a set of kite lines into the mix is just nuts!
