There are many that consider Kelly Slater to be a god amongst mere mortal surfers, and after his latest showing at the Hurley Pro at Lower Trestles, I am now a believer! For those of you who haven’t seen it, Kelly was surfing his fifth round heat against Mick Fanning when he took off on just an average looking wave and somehow punted the most ridiculous air ever to be seen in a WSL event.
Kelly drove from the bottom of the wave to launch into what was looking like an alley-oop but lost the board from his feet, and landed in an almost seated position in the foam whilst grabbing out for his board. Somehow he then turned the fail into a belly ride, before casually hopping back to his feet and nonchalantly riding the wave out with a couple of snaps and a reverse 360.
Unfortunately the bizarre trick was deemed to be an ‘incomplete manoeuvre” and Slater only was only awarded a score of 4.17 for his efforts, before losing the 5th round heat to Fanning. The video of Kelly at play can be seen below as the WSL crew discuss their thoughts and we would be interested to hear if you think the trick should have counted and scored more than 4.17 or do you think the judges were right to mark Kelly down?
