An intriguing and revolutionary fin system has been floated on Kickstarter this week and if things go to plan Surfboard fins could be changing forever. Bob Foulke has created the ONE80 pivoting fin system from an idea he initially had 40 years ago and is now seeking a whopping $200 000 to bring the design to fruition.
The money being sought will go towards making the tooling and starting the manufacturing process of ONE80 fins, which will be initially fitted to ONE80 Surfboards. The pivoting fins are fully adjustable and can be as loose or as stiff as you want, and can even be locked in a fixed position like traditional skegs. Just as you can tighten and loosen skateboard trucks and can completely alter your riding experience, this fin system will do the same to your Surfing.
Increasing drive and reducing turning circles the ONE80 Fin System is certainly a clever idea and one we hope reaches manufacture as we would like the opportunity to put them through their paces. Bob has been working on the idea for 6 years and has been trialling and adjusting his prototypes, finally creating a design fit for purpose that is ready for market.
The fins are instantly interchangeable without needing any special tools (fin keys) and are simply adjusted using knurled wheels either side of the fin box. The system can be set up as a Single fin, thruster, quad, twinny or 5 fin set up and can even be altered whilst out in the ocean.
For a better understanding of Bob’s idea and the ONE80 Fin System, the Kickstarter Campaign Video can be found below this article, where you will find Bob detailing his idea and see the fins in action. Let us know if you think Bob has had a eureka moment and if the ONE80 Fin System could change Surfing forever? At time of writing the project has received backing of just over $7000 from 32 backers, so still a mountain to climb, but with a month to go anything is possible.
