In scenes that looked very much like my home break in the midst of summer, 150 surfers have attempted to break the current world record for the most people riding the same wave together. The record breaking attempt took place at La Jolla Shores over the weekend and the surfers were trying to break the previous record of 110, which was set in Cape Town back in 2009.
Although this would be many peoples worse nightmare, the surfers were not only trying to secure the world record but were also raising money to help underprivileged kids through the Boys to Men Program. The criteria for this unusual record is pretty simple, as many surfers as possible have to be standing for at least five seconds. Unfortunately the participants were unsuccessful on this occasion, with only 97 surfers managing to find their feet at the same time. Undeterred, the organisers are already making plans to try again later in the year.
Conditions weren’t perfect but it was a good turn out with boards of all shapes and sizes in the lineup and you can see a brief video of the world record attempt below. Were you a part of this attempted World Record or do you think you have seen more surfers on a wave you have been on a your local beach?
