Not that any of us got to see it, but the first event on the Big Wave Tour has run its course and the winner has been announced as Makuaiki Rothman, who has got his title defending season off to a flyer. As well as bagging the win at Punta de Lobos, reigning world champion Makua is also expected to be honoured at tonights Big Wave Awards in California.
The Quiksilver Ceremonial has been surrounded by controversy, due to the fact the WSL decided not to broadcast the event and then caused further dismay by banning locals from transmitting their own live feed. We have seen many unhappy comments from big wave fans on our own website and social accounts, and the WSL had to disable comments on their own site.
The full results at the Quiksilver Ceremonial read in order, Makua Rothman, Cristian Merello, Ramon Navarro, Nic Lamb, Grant Baker and Mark Matthews. To get a feel for the size of the waves we all missed and a sense of what the surfers were throwing themselves into you can see a near 10 point ride by local hero Ramon Navarro below, but it would have been so nice to be able to watch it live!!
