Imagine the scenario, the sun is shining, the wind is still and the water is calm, a perfect evening for a paddle. You grab your board and set off into the sunset, paddle in hand with not a care in the world and everything feels great. From out of nowhere a huge beast bucks and rears beneath you and launches you off the board and into the water, before you even realise what is going on.
That is exactly what happened to one unfortunate Paddleboarder recently, as he set off for a cruise, when a Manatee lurking in the shallows below him became frightened and panicked and lurched out of the murky water, throwing the unsuspecting SUPper off his board. Amazingly the Paddleboarder remained remarkably calm and even managed to laugh about the incident which I am sure would have left me needing a change of underwear.
For those who are not familiar with the Manatee, these are large beasts, sometimes known as the Sea Cow and kind of a cross between a seal, hippo and whale. They can weigh nearly 600kg and can grow up to 4 metres in length, but luckily for the guy involved the Manatee are actually herbivores and this one was undoubtedly just as scared as the paddler involved.
The unlikely encounter was captured on film and we have attached the clip below, how the Paddleboarder remained so calm is a mystery, the boiling and turbulent water would be enough of a scare for most. Have a look at the unconventional meeting below and let us know if you have ever encountered the Manatee or have ever had any other scrapes with marine life?
