Last year (with tongue in cheek) we considered the sport of SnowSUPping as a new sport for the Winter Olympics, after finding a clip of inflatable Paddleboards being used in the snow. Whilst it looked a lot of fun, the riders weren’t really in control and the rides were pretty short. A clip has reached us today of Manca Notar, taking her Paddleboard onto the slopes of Slovenia and carving through the perfect powder conditions and nailing some pretty long runs.
Manca is a professional Paddleboarder who rides for both Naish and Red Bull, and is a competitor on the Standup World Series as well as a competent Wind and Kitesurfer. Although Slovenia does get waves in the Adriatic Sea, it isn’t a spot known for world class waves and Manca has perfected her talent on the shores of Maui, Hawaii.
The featured video shows Manca hauling her Paddleboard up the slopes, before carving her way back down, well in control with some nice snaking turns. As well as using her paddle to aid the turns, Manca also digs in and helps to keep her momentum going, very much like Paddleboarding in the sea. Considering her board is over 8′ long, Manca does well to find the strength to turn it, even more impressive when you notice the fins still fitted as she first heads off to hit the snow.
The video, aptly entitled Powder Hawaii 3 can be seen below, we would love to hear from you if you have ever taken your Paddleboard out in the snow, and do you think with a bit of tweaking SnowSUP could be a viable sport?
