Surf-Report would like to offer a huge congratulations to Grant “Twiggy Baker who has been crowned the 2014 winner of the Mavericks Invitational. Eight years after first winning the event Twiggy and six other finalists tackled waves easily in excess of 30-foot and kept the live stream viewers on the edge of their seats.
All the riders took on the world famous break at Half Moon Bay with immense bravery and confidence, sometimes paddling and dropping in side by side. With a breeze from the South causing some chop to the face of the wave, the take off was incredibly sketchy and nearly every one turned into an air drop.
The watching world must have collectively gasped when Shaun Dollar took what had to be the pounding of the competition. Shaun air dropped on an absolute beast, which was impressive enough on its own, but just as he looked to have nailed it and had got the worst out the way, it all went wrong. The board appeared to stop dead and Shaun was tumbled forward as the lip bore down on him like an executioners axe travelling at the speed of a freight train. Credit must be given to the water safety team, who picked him up swiftly and safely and Shaun must appreciate the ingenuity of the inflatable vests the riders wear.
