As the Women’s Trials get underway today for the APB 2014 Pipe Challenge we are pleased to say the Men’s Draw has now been announced, and there are some mouth watering clashes lined up and a few names that stand out in the heats. Due to get underway on the 18th of February, the Association of Professional Bodyboarders have been working extremely hard to pull the event off and we wait with excited trepidation.
Heat 1 features one name in particular that stands out and that is the name of Jamie O’Brien. We are not sure if it is THE J.O.B, but we hope it is! Jamie is famed for his heroic efforts at Pipe on a shortboard and for riding a dirt-cheap beginner surfboard at Backdoor, but somehow we feel he will be more than capable of impressing on a Bodyboard!
Round 4 sees South African Andre Botha, the youngest winner of a Double World title back in 1998 and 1999 and the latest young gun to look like he will dominate the sport 14 year old Tanner McDaniel. Although these two are not going head to head at this stage, they both have great prospects at making the next round.
Draw 5 is a particular mouth-watering prospect, firstly it sees two riders I have had the pleasure of associating with, Jacob Romero and Tom Rigby, and I have a feeling it will be one of the hardest fought rounds in the comp to this point. It is also great to see the name of Kainoa McGee seeded to Round 5 as he is also competing in the Drop Knee event too.
The top 16 riders in the sport have automatically been placed into Round 6 and you can look forward to seeing Mike Stewart and Pierre Louis Costes pitted against each other and other names such as Jake Stone, Six-times World Champ Guilherme Tamega, Dave Hubbard and last years Tour winner Ben Player all fighting for the title of the 2014 Pipe Challenge Champion.
As yet we still have no news of a live stream, but we hope beyond hope that the APB manage to lay on a live stream for the millions of Bodyboard fans that will undoubtedly want to tune in.
