If you follow Mike Stewart on Instagram you may have seen an intriguing post this afternoon, when Mike announced he was in Los Angeles on a real cool project and that it would be revealed via Facebook Live. We immediately started imaginng all sorts of scenarios, maybe Mike was in LA for a movie audition or could it be to unveil a Bodyboard ride at Six Flags amusement park? It turns out that Facebook are really upping the ante and going all out to develop Facebook Live and Mike Stewart is right behind it, with the hope of using it to live stream from major Bodyboard events and potentially reaching out to 1.6 billion Facebook users around the world.
Mike Stewart has not only been a Bodyboard pioneer, but has also been at the forefront of Facebook Live and during the recent Mike Stewart Pipeline Invitational, he was actually dashing around using Facebook Live to promote the comp (which if you follow Mike, many of you will have seen). The response was really positive and the feed well received and off the back of that, Facebook invited Mike to the event in Los Angeles.
Mike was at the FB Live event with Tanner McDaniel and the pair enjoyed experimenting with the camera and networking with other guests, whilst all the while streaming the show on his own Facebook page. The feed was perfectly clear, with good sound quality, without any buffering, and bodes extremely well for the future of live streaming direct from the beach at Bodyboarding comps. As soon as the video is initially streamed it is also available to immediately replay and catch up on anything you missed – you can head over to Mike’s Facebook page to check out all of Mike and Tanners videos.
One thing we really like about this type of feed, is that it feels really personal and with Mike behind the camera, you really get an insight into a lot of goings on behind the scenes. We posed the question to Mike, whether he would be using this technology at Teahupoo, at the Sparkgreen Tahiti Challenge later this month, and we are pleased to say Mike confirmed “he is working on it” and has the backing of the Facebook Live team to make it happen. Have you been following Mike and Tanner’s reports from LA today and are you impressed with the quality of the feed and ease of access? Do you think Facebook Live is the way forward to stream bodyboard events, bearing in mind the lack of funding and the problematic feeds from previous competitions?
