After much speculation, the Red Bull Storm Chase Mission 3 finally gets underway live from Gwithian Beach in Cornwall UK. The event, which will see four of the worlds best Windsurfers pitted against each other in extreme conditions, is going ahead in what is being described as the 50 year storm and is rumoured to be worse than the Great Storm of 1987.
According to Head Judge, Duncan Coombes, and via the Storm Chase Facebook page, the judges are expecting to see waves anywhere from half mast in size to double over mast. Currently the forecast from MagicSeaweed is for onshore winds gusting up to 64 mph and a swell increasing all day and peaking at 30 foot in size.
To say we have never witnessed anything like this is an understatement and it is fair to say that anything could happen. Red Bull have employed a crack water safety team to be on site and even have a helicopter on standby for any emergency that may come up. The sailors themselves will be wearing emergency beacons that will enable potential rescuers to be able to find them in the biblical size swell.
As we go to “press”the Red Bull Storm Chase website is reporting the preliminary heats are underway and you should be able to watch a live stream of the event here. It’s due to be a horrible day today, so what better way to pass the time than putting the kettle on and kicking back and tuning in to watch these brave and skilful Sailors do battle?
